The studios David Chipperfield Architects and b720 Arquitectos, (leaded by Fermín Vázquez), completed jointly the Foredeck building of the America’s Cup in Valencia. The building and its park were the epicentre of the world’s most important egattas: the Louis Vuitton’s Cup and the 32nd America’s Cup Match, which took place in 2007.

In the heart of the reorganisation of the industrial seaport of Valencia, the Foredeck building became the central venue for teams and sponsors, as well as a privileged viewpoint to follow the regattas.

Designed as a strategic viewpoint located in the far end of the seaport dock, the Foredeck building (renamed after the famous poem Veles e Vents by Àusias March) becomes a privileged viewpoint above the dock and the regattas area to follow the sports events. Structurally, the building is formed by four platforms arranged at several heights and slightly shifted, creating shadows and uninterrupted views, and achieving a perfect integration of the building with the port area landscape and with the sea.

The platforms, free from columns, are –apparently– suspended in the air, though in fact they lean on four structural supports, two vertical and two slightly tilt, which are in turn vertical communication cores integrating the lifts and stairs facilities. The façades, in turn, vanish in big glass surfaces among platforms, thanks to the sun protection provided by the huge cantilevers in the sunniest spots: those facing Noon (channel) or West (dock).

The distribution of the 10,500 m2 of the Foredeck has been conceived as a semi-exterior space giving access to the building, where we also find a public bar and restaurant. The first floor is the culmination of the avenue-viewpoint of the AC Park, also public, which holds restaurants and shops. Finally, the upper floors comprise the private or VIP areas, dedicated to the America’s Cup and its sponsors. The second floor includes the lounge rooms, and the third floor, a proper panoramic viewpoint of the project, a restaurant, a private room for monitoring regattas and a wellness area with solarium.

The building shows a small palette of materials: concrete structure, white metal ceiling panels with fitted lightings, wooden exterior floors and white resin interior floors. The intense colours of the interior furniture counteract the predominance of white in the whole building. The rise parking –with capacity for eight hundred vehicles – is flanking the building and has been thought as a continuous piece along the channel. Its roofing is indeed a viewpoint and its net area has a polyvalent use. There are bars, restaurants, information points and recreational activities on it. Its elevation favours an optimal point of view on the boats sailing through the channel, at the same time that avoids the complications that would derive from a parking built under the sea level.

The pedestrian’s terraced walk giving access to the area duplicates the curved design generated by the new channel: 55,000 m2 of park and pergolas foreseen for the event and the public performances. It’s the perfect link between Valencia and its new seafront.
